What do employers tell candidates before the interview?

We read the job postings of 304 employers. Many say how to ask for an adjustment. 7 say what the interview will involve.

If you do not know what the interview will be like, the posting will rarely tell you. Ask. Below is what employers do say and the six questions that fill the gap.

Four findings

  1. 117 of 304

Most of what employers say is how to ask for an adjustment

38% say in their postings that candidates can ask for an accommodation in applying or interviewing and 49 name the interview itself. This is often standard legal wording, but it does show that requests are expected.

  2. 7 of 304

Very few say what the interview involves

Adyen, Deliveroo, Pleo, Vestwell, Railway, Customer.io and Cloudflare state the stages, the length or the format in their postings. For the other 297, the posting does not say how many rounds there are or what they look like.

  3. 4 of 304

A handful point to a page written for candidates

Adyen, Twitch, Circle and GitLab link a guide, a candidate hub or an interviewing page from the posting itself. 4 more (Reddit, Upwork, CircleCI and Help Scout) say whether the interview is recorded or noted by software.

  4. 290 of 304

The rest say nothing about the process in the posting

Neither the stages, nor a guide, nor recording. That does not mean they hide it. An employer may describe it on a careers page or tell candidates when it makes contact and this study did not read those.

Six questions to ask the recruiter

These are ordinary questions to put to a recruiter. Sending them by email before the first call also gives you the answers in writing.

How many rounds are there and in what order?
Few postings say. Knowing the sequence lets you prepare for each stage rather than for everything.
What format is each round and how long does it last?
Live call, one-way recording, take-home or in person. Each needs different practice.
Who will I be speaking to?
A recruiter, a manager and a panel ask different things and you can adjust your examples.
Is the interview recorded, or is software taking notes?
Few postings say. 4 of 304 do and you can ask to opt out where it is offered.
Is there anything written to help me prepare?
4 of 304 point to a guide in the posting. More may have one on a careers page, so ask whether the recruiter can send it.
Can I have an adjustment, such as extra time or a different format?
117 of 304 say in the posting that you can ask. It is a standard request and you do not need to explain more than you want to.

The employers that say more

14 employers repeat wording about the process, a guide, or recording in most of their postings. These are their own words.

The public job-board interfaces that employers expose so their listings can be embedded elsewhere: Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby. No scraping behind a login and nothing private.

  2. 2.The unit is the employer

One employer posting hundreds of identical jobs counts once. A statement counts only when the same sentence appears in at least 40% of the employer's unique postings and only employers with at least 5 unique postings are eligible.

  3. 3.Four things measured

Whether postings tell candidates they can ask for an accommodation or adjustment in applying or interviewing; whether they describe the stages, length or format of the interview process; whether they point to a page written about the process or preparing for it; and whether they say if the interview is recorded or noted by software.

  4. 4.How each was decided

Accommodations were found by a keyword rule (a sentence mentioning an accommodation or adjustment together with a candidate-side word such as applicant, interview or recruiter), then corrected by hand: 2 employers removed and 11 added, each with a reason in the dataset notes. The other three were judged by reading every repeated sentence. Every quote is checked word for word against the stored text.

  5. 5.What was left out

Fraud warnings, privacy notices, salary notes and statements about AI. The AI statements are the subject of a separate study.

What this study cannot tell you

  • Postings are not where most employers describe the process

We read what is repeated in the job postings, plus the link text beside it. Careers pages, recruiter emails and candidate portals were not read, so a missing statement does not mean the employer tells candidates nothing.

  • The sample leans toward technology employers

It is employers that use Greenhouse, Lever or Ashby and that we could find by name. Do not read it as the whole labor market.

  • Accommodation wording is often standard legal text

Counting it shows how many employers state it, not how well any of them handle a request.

  • A threshold decides what counts

A statement that appears in fewer than 40% of an employer's postings is missed. One example: Deliveroo links an engineering interview guide from a minority of its postings, so it is not counted as pointing to a guide.

  • This is a snapshot

Postings were collected on November 1, 2026. Employers change their wording.

Common questions

Does a posting that says nothing mean the interview will be hard or unfair?

No. Most postings in this study say nothing about the process and a posting is often not where an employer describes it. Ask the recruiter.

Can I ask for an accommodation if my posting does not mention one?

Yes. You can ask the recruiter at any point. 117 of 304 employers say so in their postings and the rest may not have put it there. The rules that apply depend on the country you are in.

What should I ask a recruiter before an interview?

How many rounds there are, what format and length each one has, who you will meet, whether it is recorded, whether there is anything to help you prepare and whether you can have an adjustment. The list on this page has the reason for each.

How was this study done?

We read the public job postings of 304 employers on Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby, kept the sentences repeated in at least 40% of each employer's postings and judged what each one tells a candidate. The limits are on this page and the data is a CSV.

Data and corrections

The dataset has one row per employer and is published as a CSV under CC BY 4.0. If an employer is described wrongly, write to support@zoevera.com and we will fix it and note the date here. See also the AI in job interviews study and all research.
