Prepare with AI. Answer without it. Application materials and interview preparation are open at almost every employer that says anything. Take-home work is conditional. Live interviews are closed at 13 of 14.
The rule tightens as the interview gets closer
Employers that state a rule for each stage. Counts are employers; a stage is counted only when the employer states a rule for it, so the totals differ. Of the 41 employers, 15 state any rule for candidates.
- Allowed
- Only under conditions, or unless told otherwise
- Not allowed

Four findings
13 of 14
Live interviews are closed to AI
8 employers prohibit it outright and 5 unless the interviewer says it is part of the exercise. Thoughtworks is the only one that allows it and it expects candidates to judge the output critically.
13.5%
Most employers publish nothing
41 of 303 repeat a statement about AI in hiring across their postings (95% interval 10.1 to 17.8%). For the rest, the posting is silent.
25 of 41
More employers describe their own AI use than set rules for you
Only 15 set rules for candidates. The most common use employers describe is screening or assessing applications.
3 of 15
Employers record interviews and some forbid you to
6 employers record or transcribe interviews with AI. 3 of the 15 that set rules for candidates (Fastly, Thoughtworks and Toast) prohibit candidates from using their own recording tools.
What the 41 employers say they do with AI
Number of employers. An employer can appear in more than one row, so the rows overlap and do not add up to the total.
- Screen or assess applications15
- Administrative workscheduling, drafting, notes8
- Record or transcribe interviews6
- Say a person makes the final decision4
- Assess AI skill in hiring3
- Do not use AI to screen applications1

Before your interview
Find the policy
15 of the 41 employers link to a dedicated AI page from their postings. Look for it in the posting or on the careers site before you prepare.
Check each stage on its own
Employers set different rules for application materials, take-home work and live interviews, as the chart above shows.
Ask about recording
If an interview will be recorded or transcribed, look for the opt-out. Toast, for example, says you can opt out at any time.
Rehearse the way you will be judged
Most live interviews are unaided, so practice the answer out loud, on camera, without help.

Common questions
Can I use ChatGPT during a live job interview?
At most employers that publish a rule, no. 13 of the 14 that state a live-interview rule prohibit AI: 8 always and 5 unless they tell you otherwise. Thoughtworks is the one that allows it and it expects you to judge the output critically. Read the company's own rule before you go in.
Can I use AI to prepare for an interview?
Yes. Every employer that stated a preparation rule allows or encourages it (5 of 5) and 8 of 9 allow AI help with application materials. Several ask that the content stay yours: refine, do not replace.
Do employers use AI on candidates?
25 of the 41 describe their own use of AI in hiring. 15 say they use it to screen or assess applications, 6 to record, transcribe or summarise interviews and 8 for tasks like scheduling and drafting. 4 say a person makes the final decision.
Can I record my interview with an AI notetaker?
Check first. 3 employers (Fastly, Thoughtworks and Toast) prohibit candidates from using their own recording or transcription tools, while 6 say they record or transcribe interviews with AI themselves. Some of them mention advance notice, consent or an opt-out.
What happens if I break an employer's AI rule?
3 employers say misuse can lead to disqualification: Datadog, Klaviyo and Oscar Health. Others state a rule without naming a consequence.
How was this study done?
We read the public job postings of 303 employers, found the 46 that repeat an AI and hiring statement in most of their postings, removed 5 that were not about hiring and classified the remaining 41 from their own words. Every classification links to a verbatim quote and the full dataset is public.
Method
From 596 company names to 41 employers
Each step keeps only the employers that pass the next test.
- Company names tried596
- Had a public job board24,827 unique postings345
- Enough postings to test5 or more postings303
- Repeated an AI and hiring statementin 40% or more of postings46
- Classified after exclusions41
1.Collect
On November 1, 2026 we read the public job-board APIs that employers expose for embedding their listings: Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby. We kept counts and the sentences that mention both AI and hiring. Postings are deduplicated by company, normalised title and text length.
2.Choose the unit
The unit is the employer, not the posting, so one employer with 400 identical postings counts once. Boards with fewer than 5 unique postings were skipped (42 boards), because a repeated notice cannot be told from a coincidence at that size.
3.Match
An employer counts as stating a position when one such sentence appears in at least 40% of its postings. 46 matched.
4.Exclude
5 matches were not about hiring. They are listed below with the reason.
5.Classify
Each remaining employer was classified by reading its quoted statement and, where the posting links to one, its policy page. 12 pages were read; 3 could not be and those employers are reported as unknown. Anything an employer did not say is left blank, never inferred.
6.Verify
A script checks that every quote appears word for word in the stored text. The run fails if one does not. Shares carry a 95% Wilson interval and counts inside the employers that set rules are small, so read them as counts, not estimates for all employers.
Source documentation: Greenhouse Job Board API, Lever Postings API and Ashby public job posting API.
Matches we excluded
- anaplan
- The only match is a "Privacy & AI Notice" heading above a candidate-privacy link. It says nothing about AI.
- cloudflare
- Describes the traits it wants ("AI-native curiosity"). Not a statement about the hiring process.
- deepgram
- Describes what the job involves. Not a statement about the hiring process.
- replit
- The match is navigation text from the careers page (a list of links).
- sift
- The match describes the company's own product ("AI-powered fraud platform").
What this study cannot tell you
The sample leans toward technology
Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby are used mostly by software and internet companies. Nothing here describes hospitals, schools, government or large retailers.
It measures what employers publish, not what happens in the room
An employer with no statement in its postings may still have a policy on its careers site or tell candidates by email.
The match is conservative
A policy that appears in fewer than 40% of an employer's postings, or that does not use AI vocabulary in a hiring sentence, is missed. The true share of employers with a policy is probably higher than 13.5%.
It is a snapshot
Policies change quickly. This one is dated November 1, 2026.
It is not legal advice
Quotes belong to the employers that wrote them. Read the current policy before you rely on it.
